The most dangerous of all emotions & perhaps the most necessary!
The more I know about its history, its people, the struggles endured, the dreams forgotten and remnants of what once was......the closer I grow to this place!
'I hate Jo'burg' you'll hear them say. The traffic, the dirt & dust, the crime......oh' the crime!' What they forget to mention is the energy that makes the city what it is. The hubbub that fills you with hope that something is happening around you. Young and old moving briskly from one point to the next chasing a better tomorrow. You can feel the rhythm of the city beneath your feet. The thumping and stomping that follows the motion. You smile a little and feel warm inside because motion is good, motion wards off stagnation, motion means change…..or at least you hope.
We grew up simply referring to it as ‘Jozi Maboneng’ or ‘Egoli’. That is to say ‘the place of light’ or 'home of gold’. The city were residents are up at crack of dawn chasing their dream. Many came searching for gold….and they continue to do so….. ‘ngize ngi funa igolide’
"Ngize ngi funa igolide"....I will keep digging, I will get my share of the precious metal.
"Hope, perhaps the most dangerous of all emotions and perhaps the most necessary!"
