Eskista - jolting my shoulders back & forth
You've seen Beyonce do it in her "who run the world" video...shaking, rolling and bouncing her shoulders like a badass habesha princess. Maybe you didn't recognize it but that looks very much like the traditional Eskista dance of Ethiopia.
Eskista is a traditional Ethiopian dance performed by both men and women that is known for its unique emphasis on intense shoulder movement. Dancers usually dress in traditional attire (gabi or netela) representing many of the country's ethnic tribes. The dance is simply mesmerizing, partly because of the accompanying music as well its complexity. Although there are a lot of variations to the movements including: jumping, spinning etc, the emphasis is on the shoulders. The dance is believed to date back 3000 years ago and is considered an essential part of storytelling in the culture.
