An artist a day: John Vusi Mfupi

To showcase and pay homage to insane talent, I've decided to do an art series. Every day for the next 10 days, I will be sharing 2 of my favorite art works by a specific artist accompanied by a short artist bio. The intention is not to review these works but rather to experience them. I hope these pieces will move you, challenge you, rebuke you and soothe you as they have done to me.

Day 2: South African artist, Mfupi’s work is said to be a celebration of youth and mobility. His style of expression is through cycled collages. My favourite series is his recent work - burnt paper collage.  Mfupi started using the collage technique instead of canvasses and paint as a matter of need. He found that canvasses were bulky and required a lot of space for storage.  Proof that “necessity is the mother of invention”, his collages are now a technique which he has managed to master and a key avenue of telling his stories.
